The Halifax firefighters union says 10 trucks are off duty Thursday.

The union is calling on management to ensure something like this does not happen.

The trucks are either being used for mandatory training or out of service, and there is no professional fire fighter backfill in place, according to the social media post.

The unavailable trucks include: 4E, 6E, 8 Tact, 11T, 45E, 15E, 5Q, 12E, 12A, 12 Tact.

“Halifax Professional Fire Fighters believe ongoing training is essential—but it should never come at the expense of public safety,” the statement read.
“To help ensure four fire fighters are on every truck, HPFF made contractual concessions by agreeing to straight-time overtime. Yet when training takes crews away from their coverage area, management refuses to backfill with professional fire fighters.”
The union says management would rather leave trucks empty than pay to to put members in the seats to maintain coverage.
They released a photo showing which stations have trucks out of service are busy with training. There are eight red markers, representing the stations affected. But at Station 12 in Highfield Park, Dartmouth, there are three trucks unavailable for calls.
