Two people are dead and police believe alcohol was involved after a boat flipped over on a river in Annapolis County.

Four people were in the boat when it capsized on Monday night.

A 46-year-old Granville Centre man and a 27-year-old Weymouth man were able to swim to shore.

In an update Tuesday afternoon, police say a 49-year-old Granville Centre man was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital and the body of a 26-year-old Granville Centre man was located at midnight on Tuesday.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, along with search and rescue teams, RCMP and local fire departments were all involved in the search.

Annapolis Valley Fire Cheif Andrew Canton tells our newsroom, they quickly rescued two of the boat’s occupants and learned two other people were unaccounted for and began searching.

“It took about an hour to find the first person, then just before midnight we found the other person,” said Canton.

He is urging anyone going out on the water this year to ensure they have enough lifejackets for everyone, noting that in this case only one of the four people on board was wearing one.

“It takes 15 seconds to make sure you have a life jacket on and it can literally save your life, so please take that time and be safe,” said Canton.

Police say the investigation is continuing and did not say if charges will be brought forward.
