When you think St. Patrick’s Day, you think green. Green beer, green hats, green rivers, green everything. But here’s the twist that surprises almost everyone:
St. Patrick’s original colour was BLUE.
Yep. Not emerald. Not shamrock. Not “your coworker’s neon wig.” Blue.
In early Irish art and historical depictions, St. Patrick is shown wearing a soft, sky‑blue robe. Even the old Irish presidential standard used a shade called “St. Patrick’s Blue.” It wasn’t until much later-thanks to shamrocks, Irish nationalism, and a whole lot of marketing-that green muscled its way to the top of the rainbow.
So really, if you show up on St. Paddy’s Day wearing blue, you’re not off-theme… You’re old‑school Irish. Like “before it was cool” Irish.
But let’s be honest: Thunder Bay is not giving up its green. Not when we’ve got snowbanks taller than leprechauns…I just wish there wasn’t a pothole at the end of the rainbow.
And now… a fun St. Paddy’s Day song for Thunder Bay!
Here’s a little tune made just for today — perfect for jigging in your kitchen, your car, or while trying to find parking at the LCBO.
