It took a while but the U.S. Army came through. Back in 1945, Meri Mion’s mother baked her a cake for her 13th birthday and left it on the windowsill to cool. Hungry American soldiers
apparently helped themselves to it, so the U.S. Army presented her a cake for her 90th birthday to replace the one that was eaten. Mion was the guest of honor at a ceremony in Vincenza, Italy pretty close to where the 88th Infantry Division fought its way into the city back on April 28, 1945. They even sang “Happy Birthday” to her in both languages. Nice moment.
