Police have made an arrest in relation to a homicide that occurred in the 1700 block on Brunswick Street on Christmas Eve last year.

On December 24, 2022, at around 1:15 a.m. Halifax Regional Police responded to a disturbance at the corner of Prince and Brunswick streets and found 31-year-old Ryan Michael Sawyer laying unresponsive on the sidewalk. He was taken to hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Reports have said that an eyewitness from that night saw one of the bouncers putting a man into a chokehold.

The suspect, a 37-year-old Alexander Pishori Levy, turned himself into police today at the HRP headquarters on Gottingen Street. He is scheduled to appear in Halifax provincial court today to face charges of manslaughter and criminal negligence causing death.

Earlier this year, Levy pleaded not guilty in a separate assault case stemming from an incident last October.

Police say they’re not looking for more suspects at this time, but if you have any information, photos, or videos from the incident please contact them as soon as possible by calling 902-490-5020.
