Three officers face disciplinary hearing August 16th in connection to the death of Stacy DeBungee.

Sergeant Shawn Whipple along with Staff Sergeants Shawn Harrison and Susan Kaucharik face charges of failing to perform their duties according to the Police Services Act.

The hearing was ordered by an adjudicator back in February, citing that his decision was just one part of a much larger controversy involving policing of Indigenous people in Thunder Bay.

Adjudicator Lee Ferrier added that there is public importance in seeing serious police misconduct addressed.

The initial investigation into the October 2015 death of the 41-year-old Anishinaabe man was deemed non-criminal within a day of his body being discovered.

The passing was singled out in the 2018 Broken Trust report into how the force handled cases involving Indigenous people.

Two of the officers are also accused of failing to treat or protect people equally during the case.

They first appeared in court back in April.
