Nearly 60 people are displaced and one person seriously injured after what appears to have been an explosion or structural failure at a senior’s complex in Sydney.

Mayor of Cape Breton Regional Municipality, Amanda McDougall took to social media to let residents know of the serious incident that happened around 4 p.m. Friday near Reeves St.

Emergency crews including Red Cross were on the scene helping residents deal with alternate arrangements.

McDougall says at this time they do not know if the issue was related to the massive snow fall from last weekend.

Provincial roads had just been cleared, but many are still stranded after eastern Nova Scotia got pummeled with anywhere between 100 and 150 cm.

Cape Breton remains in a state-of-emergency until 2 p.m. on Sunday.
