Thick black smoke filled the north end of Halifax after a fire on Robie Street.

Smoke could be seen covering up the sky shortly after 8 a.m. on Tuesday.

The fire broke out on one of the upper levels of an apartment building that’s currently under construction.

It’s located on the corner of Robie and Almon where a number of new residential buildings are under development.

By 9 a.m. the situation was under control.

Video footage shows a series of explosions where the fire was burning, reports indicate they were related to propane tanks.

Police and fire crews remain on the scene and are asking drivers to avoid the area.

Residents are being told to close their windows and shut off air exchangers.
