If you have diabetes, there is a new provincial program to help save you thousands of dollars every year.

The $5.9 million Sensor-based Glucose Monitoring Program will help you cover the cost of blood-sugar monitoring supplies, which can cost between $3,000 and $4,000.

“People living with diabetes shouldn’t have to bear the cost of equipment and supplies while trying to manage a condition that can be life-changing,” said Health and Wellness Minister Michelle Thompson.

“The new program will help more people afford the equipment and supplies they need, to better manage their care.”

Starting Monday, you can apply if you have Type 1 or Type 2 and meet specific criteria, including needing multiple daily injections of insulin.

Deductibles are based on income.  If you’re household makes less than $60,000, there is no deductible.  If you’re household makes between $60,000 and $150,000, you will pay a deductible between $500 and $1,000.

Coverage will also be available under existing pharmacare programs starting next week, and you can choose the program that best suits your needs.

Roughly 106,000 thousand Nova Scotians live with diabetes.
