Residents in Jasper are dealing with their worst nightmare, according to Alberta’s premier.

A massive wildfire roared into the community Wednesday with flames hundreds of feet high.

Speaking during a news conference on Thursday, Danielle Smith said she cannot imagine what residents are going through.

“We share the sense of loss with all of those who live in the town, who care for it, and who have helped build it,” Smith said through tears.

Significant loss is being reported, though officials said the full extent of damage is unknown.

Photos and video show many buildings in the community reduced to rubble.

Smith also expressed gratitude to first responders who have been working to battle the flame.s

“Once again, you’ve put yourselves on the front lines in a show of true heroism. Thank you for your bravery and your commitment to keeping Albertans safe,” she added.

About 25,000 people were evacuated from the town and Jasper National Park. Officials said there have been no reported injuries.
