Expect some traffic delays if you’re driving near the Halifax port Tuesday morning.

Some local members of the Halifax Halifax Longshoremen’s Association Local 269 are picketing and slowing traffic in the area of Hollis and Lower Water streets.

Spokesperson Kevin Piper said a cruise ship anchored at the port and used its own workers to bring passengers in on smaller boats.

Typically, the longshoremen at the Halifax port would tie up the cruise ship in one of two available spots along the port. Five of them were unable to do that part of their jobs today, he said.

He said the few union members picketing downtown want to defend their jurisdiction. Five workers who couldn’t tie up the ship today, but that could be 10 workers tomorrow or more in the future, he said.

Halifax police were on the scene of the demonstration around 10 a.m.
