Canada starts the second-last day of competition at the Paris Olympics with its eigth gold medal.
Katie Vincent of Mississauga, Ont. raced to a photo finish in the women’s canoe 200-metre singles, claiming the gold and the world’s best time of 44.12.
This is the first ever Olympic gold medal for Canada in a women’s canoe or kayak event.
It comes after Vincent’s bronze medal win with Sloan MacKenzie of Windsor Junction, N.S. in the doubles 500-metre final on Friday.
Sophia Jensen of Quebec placed sixth in her Olympic debut.
Michelle Russell of Fall River, N.S. raced in the event but missed the podium. She placed eighth in the A final with a time of 1.53.83. This after coming second in a women’s single 500m semifinal with a time of 1:50.28.
Team Canada has won 25 medals at the games.
