The Nova Scotia Liberals want to make public transit free for everyone in the province.

Leader Zach Churchill promised to implement the policy if the party wins the next provincial election.

“Making public transit free in Nova Scotia isn’t just about getting from point A to point B. It’s about giving people the freedom and peace of mind to get where they need to go without worrying about the cost,” Churchill wrote in a news release.

He made the announcement alongside Cole Harbour-Dartmouth MLA Lorelei Nicoll in Cole Harbour on Tuesday.

On Sept. 1, the transit fare in Halifax went up by 25 cents a ride for adults, kids and seniors.

People who use transit every day could save up to $1080 a year, with seniors saving up to $792, according to the release.

As part of the Liberals’ plan, they would support more than 25 transit organizations across the province with extra funding to expand and make more seats to transport more people.

The liberals made the announcement ahead of the fall legislative session, which beings this week, the Liberals hope to introduce other “bold ideas” for Nova Scotians.

Churchill said they hope this legislative session shows people in the province “that there is a viable alternative to Tim Houston’s Conservatives.”
