Health Canada will take a strong safety lens in making sure that this product is safe.

That’s the opinion of the Medical Officer of Health for the Thunder Bay District, Dr. Janet DeMille, when talking about Pfizer Canada preparing to ask for authorization of its COVID-19 vaccine for kids as young as five.

The pediatric data on those between five and 11 years of age showed a strong and safe immune response from two doses, with the caveat that the doses are a one-third the size given to teens and adults.

“I look forward to what (Health Canada) comes out with, which will hopefully be an approval of the vaccine which means we can start administering it to the children in Thunder Bay,” DeMille added.

A spokeswoman with the Canadian arm of the company says they are in the final stages of the submission.

The paperwork has already been submitted to the United States Food and Drug Administration (USDA) for approval of what is now known as the Comirnaty vaccine.
