The City of Thunder Bay is going to get more provincial funding.

The province is putting more cash into northern communities through the Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund (OMPF) to the tune of $500 million. The City of Thunder Bay is expected to receive over $20 million in 2022 and it can be used to support local priorities and specific needs for the city.

The OMPF is meant to recognize the challenges of northern and rural municipalities, while giving funding to those with more challenging financial struggles; support areas with limited property assessment; and help municipalities that are adjusting to year-over-year funding changes.

The province is doling out $500 million total to towns and cities across Ontario. The program will also help allow for further support to be targeted to rural farming municipalities. Specifically, the Rural Communities Grant will increase to $154 million to further support rural municipalities with the highest levels of farmland.
