The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks has confirmed blue-green algae at Open Bay on Lac des Milles Lac, located at the western part of the Thunder Bay District.
A water sample was originally collected in late September and you’re being reminded to avoid the area until at least two weeks after the bloom has dissipated.
You need to avoid drinking the water, using it for household activities, and are urged to keep pets away. If contact with a blue-green algae bloom does occur, wash with soap and water and rinse with clean water to remove the algae.
Blue-green algae are microscopic organisms usually found in small numbers, but can rapidly increase in size in warm, shallow surface water growing into blooms and producing toxins. The algae is historically uncommon in the region, but is occurring more often as we see a rising climate and water temperatures.
If you spot a suspected blue-green algae bloom, report it to the Spills Action Centre at 1-800-268-6060.
