Masking is now required in all clinical areas at the Calais Community Hospital, officials announced Wednesday.

Hospital officials said this comes amid a major increase in respiratory illnesses among patients and staff.

The directive applies to the emergency, inpatient, laboratory, radiology, surgery and respiratory departments.

Masks are optional in areas considered low-risk to more vulnerable patients, including the cafeteria, main lobby and hallways.

Hospital officials said they plan to reassess by the end of the week to determine next steps.
