Still no answer on how many lanes the main artery in Port Hawkesbury will have.

Public Works spokesperson, Gary Andrew tells our newsroom, over the coming months department staff will continue to talk with the mayor and council on whether or not Reeves Street will stay at three lanes or go back to four.

“We want to keep Reeves Street safe for people, improve efficiency of travel and support local businesses. Those criteria will help guide any decisions about potential changes.”

Gary Andrea says over the coming months they will review a recent analysis around lane configurations, but their main goal is to keep the roadway safe, improve efficiency and support local businesses.

Keeping those things in mind is what will help guide any decision about potential changes.

The design of the street has been a contentious issue for years with safety being a top concern since 2012, but more so in recent years when it changed to three lanes.

The switch was made under a pilot project, “Destination Reeves Street” with the intent of making the roadway more of a main street rather than a throughway.

These changes caused frustration and confusion over signage, but others have supported the new configuration.

In August, council voted to let residents have their say with a plebiscite that happened during the fall municipal election.

Community members voted 60 per cent in favour of switching back to four lanes.
