The Navy has now identified the sailor who died in Halifax waters on Friday.

On Friday night, two sailors were in a small boat in the Bedford Basin when their vessel overturned and sank.

One of the sailors was treated in hospital and released, but Gregory Applin tragically died.

He was a 2nd class Petty Officer and a weapons engineering technician serving on the HMCS Montreal.

Applin joined the Navy in 2005 and sailed for nearly 500 days aboard HMC ships.

The Navy says he leaves behind a loving family and many friends and colleagues.
