We’re in for a messy mix of weather across the province and it’s forcing some schools to cancel classes or send students home early.

Freezing rain warnings are in place for Halifax, most of the Truro area and all of western Nova Scotia.

Students under the South Shore, Halifax and Chignecto-Central education centres will be sent home early, while all classes are cancelled in the Annapolis Valley and Tri-Counties.

Environment Canada is forecasting the freezing rain could last a few hours before changing to snow, ice pellets and eventually rain.

The timing of the storm will make the afternoon and evening drive home extremely challenging.

Meantime, winter storm warnings are in place for most of Cape Breton with high winds and heavy snow on the way.

Blowing snow will make driving conditions difficult to navigate over the next two days before the system passes through
