An Amherst police officer faces several charges after an incident on Monday afternoon.

The Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) normally investigates instances of alleged criminal violations from police.

But because of the circumstances of the incident, the RCMP immediately took over the investigation.

SIRT oversaw the investigation and agreed with the conclusion.

An officer of the Amherst Police Department now faces nine firearms offences and two charges of impaired driving.

To support a fair trial, SIRT will not reveal specific details of the incident.
