Fort Frances council will do further review before replacing its current flag.

Councillor John McTaggart put forward a resolution that asks council to consider flying one created in the 1970s.

It was replaced by the current one a decade ago.

With council decision in 2024 to abandon the tagline ‘Boundless,’ McTaggart feels the current flag has become redundant.

During debate at council on Monday night, some councillors felt it was a good time to consider having a new flag.

“I’m in favour of coming up with having a new flag,” says Councillor Mike Behan.

“Perhaps, as they did in the 70s, open it up to a community submission where people might bring some ideas forward in terms of what they would like to see on the flag rather than looking back at one from the 1970s.”

Councillor Wendy Brunetta supports the idea of opening it up to the public but likes certain components of the current flag.

“I don’t necessarily agree that we should go back to the old flag. I don’t find it as progressive and meaningful as our current flag,” says Brunetta.

“I understand we’re removing the tagline Boundless, but I still do like the logo and the colours that are associated with the new flag. I find it to be cleaner and more progressive.”

Councillor Kaleb Firth is okay with hoisting the old flag.

“Like in any sports team, there’s always a vintage or a third jersey option. I have no problem appreciating and showing respect from where we’ve come from,” says Firth.

“I’m okay with the interim using our old 1970s while we do the contest to the public to figure out what’s new and on-trend.”

Administration has been asked to report back to council in the near future on the possible options to consider.
