Some second-year students had the opportunity to help put food on the table for those in need in Thunder Bay, while getting some great experience in the process.
On Wednesday, Students in Confederation College’s Culinary Management program helped prepare turkeys for the Regional Food Distribution Association. These turkeys are now going to be distributed to food banks to help them prepare for holiday meals.
Bryson Nishimura was one of the students involved, and explained the experience.
“We’re giving them the holiday experience that they might not have otherwise, so that feels really good, and I’m doing that through cooking which I already love.” says Nishimura. “Cooking normally is good on it’s own, you put a smile on people’s faces, they say it tastes great, that’s awesome. When it’s for someone in need, it feels even better to do that for them.”

Various members of the RFDA will be receiving turkeys to be able to distribute them. Along with this, the RFDA will be creating individual meals that can be frozen and sent to local foodbanks.
The meals will then be given to those in need when they pick up their hampers.
“This is great, we have our own kitchen at the RFDA but we don’t have a kitchen like this where there is 40 ovens,” explains Tanner Harris, RFDA Food Services Manager. “They’re just cooking up the turkeys, and I wouldn’t be able to do this, it would take me a whole month to cook this many turkeys so it’s great.”
Harris goes onto say 30 turkeys were provided to the culinary students, all which were cooked in a day.
This will yield anywhere between 400 to 500 meals for those in need this holiday season.
