Postal workers are preparing to walk off the job again.

Canada Post says it has received strike notices from the Canadian Union of Postal Workers that would take effect this Friday.

“A labour disruption would affect the millions of Canadians and businesses who rely on the postal service and deepen the company’s already serious financial situation,” states Canada Post in a release.

“It is critical that both parties focus their energies on resolving issues to reach negotiated agreements.”

The two sides had been meeting up until last Tuesday when talks were paused by Canada Post in advance of a report from the Industrial Inquiry Commissioner that was issued last Friday.

It supported a need for changes at Canada Post to improve its financial situation, including ending door-to-door mail delivery.

Canada Post reports that since 2018, the Corporation has recorded more than $3 billion in losses and expects to post another significant loss for 2024.

Earlier this year, the federal government announced it would provide Canada Post with repayable funding of up to $1.034 billion to prevent insolvency.

Postal workers went on strike last November before being ordered back to work after four weeks by the Canada Industrial Relations Board.

No word on when talks are to resume.
