After a six-month break, Parliament is back in session today with MPs returning to the House of Commons.

The day will begin with the election of a new Speaker, followed by the formal launch of the session on Tuesday with a Speech from the Throne — this time delivered by King Charles III.

That opening will mark a historic moment, as King Charles III delivers the Speech from the Throne — the first time a reigning king has done so in Canada. While it’s not unprecedented for a monarch to read the speech, it hasn’t happened since Queen Elizabeth II opened Parliament in 1977.

Ahead of the return, Prime Minister Mark Carney told Liberal MPs to prepare for a “very, very busy” period. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre said his caucus will keep its focus on affordability, public safety, and national unity.
