A Toronto man is in custody after ramming a police cruiser in his car, nearly striking two police officers as well.
The accused was attempting to evade arrest after police responded to Frederica Street West Sunday morning because of a suspicious vehicle in a parking lot. As officers approached, they learned the driver was on a court-ordered release with conditions not to operate a motor-vehicle.
They then asked the man to get out of the vehicle, when he became difficult.
Police attempted to de-escalate the situation, but the man turned on the vehicle and fled striking the cruiser and just missing the two officers.
The man left at a high speed, and police called off the chase because of safety concerns.
He was found shortly after, and taken to police headquarters.
Glenroy Nigel DOUGLAS, 25, of Toronto, is charged with:
• Assaulting a Peace Officer with a Weapon x 2
• Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle
• Flight from Peace Officer
• Resist Peace Officer
• Failure to Stop After Accident
• Failure to Comply with a Release Order
The release conditions were connected to charges laid by the Thunder Bay Police Service on Dec. 19, 2020. Those charges included Operation of a Motor Vehicle While Impaired, Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Weapon in a Motor Vehicle, and Carrying a Concealed Weapon.
He appeared in bail court on Tuesday, and will remain in custody before appearing in court again on Thursday.
