Environment Canada has issued Severe Thunderstorm Watches for Thunder Bay and Nipigon.

The forecaster says conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.

The storm is expected to move into the area early Sunday afternoon, lasting through the evening.

“Local utility outages are possible,” said the forecaster in the watches. “Damage to roofs, fences, branches or soft shelters is possible. Be prepared for severe weather.”

“If threatening weather approaches, take cover in a basement or interior room. If outside, protect yourself from flying debris and hail.”

Winds up to 90 km/hr, and toonie to golf-sized hail could be produced by the storm.

Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms capable of producing damaging hail, wind or rain.
