Emergency crews were called to the Northumberland Strait near Melmerby Beach on Tuesday evening after a report of a person in the water.
From Little Harbour Fire Department, the call came in around 8:24 p.m., according to a social media post.
Firefighters from New Glasgow and Pictou Landing also responded, along with RCMP and Emergency Health Services.
Aircraft were seen dropping parachute flares over the water to help light the area, and a rigid-hull inflatable boat from the Canadian Coast Guard was also deployed from Pictou.
Photos and posts shared online suggest the response was focused off the shoreline near Melmerby Beach, though officials have not confirmed the exact location or what led to the call.
There is no word yet on who may be missing or how the incident began.
