Anticipation is growing for a historic moment on the Pictou waterfront!

In just a matter of days Ship Hector will do a traditional launch into the harbour with thousands expected to watch the rare sight.

The replica 18-century vessel has been under reconstruction work for five years and according to the Ship Hector Society there is still a ways to go before it will be fully operational.

Once complete however, the ship will offer sail training and tours, with 60 people at a time.

History

The history of Ship Hector dates back to 1773.

It arrived in Pictou Harbour with 171 Scottish immigrants on board.

A replica was built in the 1990’s and was launched in 2000 to a large audience of about 10,000.

Fast forward 25 years later, the ship was in rough shape with a lot of rot.

What needs to be done?

Although, the launch marks a major milestone, the ship still needs a lot of work, including:

• Masts, yards, and rigging
• Electrical systems and motors
• Piping and various interior components
The weight of the boat and funding are two key reasons the society is going ahead with the launch, as planned.
The society says they are still collecting donations, and support is “essential”.
