Environment Canada is warning of the risk of a tornado as severe thunderstorms roll through the region.

A severe thunderstorm warning is currently in place for the following areas:

  • Kenora – Grassy Narrows – Whitedog
  • Dryden – Vermilion Bay
  • Sioux Narrows – Nestor Falls – Morson

As of 8:25 a.m., a line of severe thunderstorms located from 10 kilometres north of Sioux Narrows Provincial Park to Pipestone Lake was moving northeast at 55 kilometres per hour.

Forecasters said the storms could produce 90 kilometre per hour wind gusts and up to nickel-sized hail. A tornado is also possible, they said.

Impacted areas include Eagle-Dogtooth Provincial Park, Dogpaw Lake, Cedartree Lake, Flint Lake, Dryberry Lake, Caviar Lake, Point Lake, Eliza Lake, Winnange Lake, Shingwak Lake, Little Mekenak Lake, Denmark Lake, Whirlpool Lake, Populus Lake, Overflow Lake, Atikwa Lake, Hill Lake and Lawrence Lake.

Fort Frances – Emo – Rainy River was under a severe thunderstorm warning, but it has been downgraded to a watch.
