Nova Scotia’s Department of Natural Resources says firefighters made progress overnight on the Bayers Lake wildfire in Halifax, but the blaze remains out of control.

As of Tuesday evening, the fire was estimated to cover between 25 and 30 hectares in the wooded area behind Julius Boulevard and Dugger McNeil Drive, near the Kent Building Supplies store. Twelve provincial wildfire fighters stayed on scene through the night, supported by two Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency engines and crews.

Air support included one provincial helicopter and, earlier in the day, four water bombers from New Brunswick. Those aircraft returned home Tuesday night but could be called back if needed.

No homes were evacuated, but several businesses in the Bayers Lake Business Park were cleared as a precaution. Police closed sections of Chain Lake Drive, Julius Boulevard, and Susie Lake Crescent overnight to help keep the area clear for emergency crews.

Environment Canada and Nova Scotia’s Department of Health and Wellness have issued a special air quality statement for the Halifax area due to smoke from the fire. Residents in higher-risk groups — including older adults, young children, pregnant people, and those with chronic health conditions — are advised to limit outdoor activity.

Officials are asking the public to avoid unnecessary travel to the Bayers Lake area to help reduce traffic congestion. The next official update on firefighting efforts is scheduled for 9 a.m. today.
