Halifax Water is renewing its call for customers to conserve water as supply levels remain low despite recent rainfall.

The utility says rain earlier this week was not enough to replenish reservoirs, and water levels remain in the “Phase 3: Watch” stage. Without more rain, conditions could quickly move into the “warning” phase, which may trigger mandatory restrictions.

Halifax Water first asked residents and businesses to voluntarily reduce water use on August 5. The request remains in place across the Halifax Regional Municipality for all customers connected to the utility’s system.

Officials say people can help by cutting back on non-essential water use such as watering lawns and gardens, washing vehicles, or running small loads of laundry and dishes. Indoors, shorter showers, fixing leaks, and turning off taps while brushing teeth or shaving can also make a difference.

While the voluntary measures do not apply to private well users, Halifax Water notes that continued dry weather means those on well systems may also want to conserve to avoid running dry.

The utility says conservation efforts now will help protect supply levels and reduce the chance of mandatory restrictions being put in place.
