Nova Scotia’s police watchdog has charged a retired RCMP officer with three counts of sexual assault.

The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) says it has reasonable grounds to believe that retired Sergeant Darrell W. Johnson committed the offences against a woman known to him.

The alleged conduct occurred both during his service with the RCMP and after his retirement.

Johnson is scheduled to appear in Port Hawkesbury Provincial Court on November 13.

While SiRT has not provided details about when or where the alleged incidents occurred, those are expected to be discussed as part of the court proceedings.

As the matter is before the courts, SiRT says no further comment will be made at this time.

The Serious Incident Response Team investigates cases involving death, serious injury, sexual assault, intimate partner violence, or other matters of public interest arising from the actions of police officers in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

Anyone impacted by sexual assault can seek help at a local hospital or Sexual Assault Centre, or call the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-4673.
