So, here’s the thing: the past couple of months I’ve been making a concerted effort to get out more. Yes, you heard that right—I’ve been trading in my cozy-PJ nights (well… not all of them) for actual outside-the-house experiences. And guess what? It’s been a blast.

Let me paint you the scene: a few weeks ago I found myself at the Thunder Bay Community Auditorium (yes, popcorn in hand—no shame) watching a showing of Hocus Pocus. And yes: the popcorn popped, the nostalgia hit, the audience (many in costume, btw) showed up ready to have fun. The auditorium isn’t just some fancy building bringing in big-name acts—it lives up to its name: community auditorium. You could feel the “we’re in this together” vibe as the crowd cheered and laughed. Hats off to the team there for creating such a wholehearted, welcoming event. It felt like stepping into something made just for us.

Then, because I apparently caught the “get out more” bug, I was just in Toronto with my trio-counterpart (shout-out to Holly, who knows me better than I know myself at times). Holly had done her homework (because she’s that kind of friend)—she found showtimes, bars, local theatre—so we made it happen. We watched the Toronto Blue Jays fans cheer in bars, we scoped out local theatre, and then… sweet moment: we caught the musical Tell Tale Harbour, co-written by the lovely Alan Doyle (yes, the same dude I want to be friends with). He’s just this guy doing what he loves and bringing people together—and seriously: if you don’t know him yet, watch like two interviews and you’ll get it. I want to be like Alan Doyle!!

Anyway, the play: full of heart, hilarious, unapologetically Canadian, filled with folksy charm. In short, we made a night out of it—delicious snacks, drinks at the neat little bar (hello Berczy), good company—and laughed a lot.

Now listen: I know you and I aren’t giving up PJ nights and comfort‐movie marathons anytime soon (because, hello—they’re sacred). But lemme tell you something: getting out more? It’s fuel for the soul. It gives me energy, makes me excited, gives me something to do. It breaks up the rhythm of staying home (which is very comfy) and reminds me I’m part of something—my community, my city, my friends, the world.

So here’s your friendly nudge (because I’m your friend, remember?): pay attention to what’s happening in your community. Follow event listings, check out local theatres, bars, show venues. Get on social media for places/people/events. Because nothing—nothing—happens when you stay home. (But hey—re-enacting scenes from your favourite movie while wearing a pimple patch? Also a blast. Balance, friend. Both have their place.)

Go do it. Step out. Have a blast. Make the memories. And who knows? Maybe we’ll actually bump into each other on the journey.

With love, your unapologetically “get-out-more” friend.
