Snow one day and extreme cold the next seems to be the new norm in northwestern Ontario these days.

It makes it more important to keep your pets safe during extreme weather.

While some dog breeds can thrive in colder weather, most cats, dogs and other pets left outside are at risk of hypothermia, frostbite, illness or even death.

Ontario’s Solicitor General is reminding the public to take precautions.

Sylvia Jones says pets should be kept indoors in extreme weather whenever possible.

If they do live outside, check on them regularly and make sure they have an insulated shelter free from drafts.

If members of the public see a pet in distress and believe the animal’s life is in immediate danger, they should call 911 right away.
