With its grand opening set for 2027, the Thunder Bay Art Gallery is receiving a $200,000 RBC Foundation Community Spaces Grant to help fund accessibility features.
The funding will primarily support the construction of gently sloped entrances, making the space more accessible for all visitors.
“By prioritizing inclusive design from the beginning, the new gallery aims to create a more seamless and welcoming experience,” an RBC marketing executive wrote in a press release. “This ensures that community members can engage with art, learning, and programming in a space that is both accessible and inviting.”

The RBC Foundation Community Spaces Grant is designed to fund upgrades to existing public community buildings as well as the construction of new public spaces that improve accessibility and environmental sustainability. Thunder Bay is one of 41 communities across Canada receiving support through the initiative.
“We are grateful to RBC Foundation for helping us create a new Gallery that truly welcomes everyone,” said Matthew R. Hills, Executive Director of the Thunder Bay Art Gallery. “As we celebrate 50 years of bringing art, learning, and community together in Northern Ontario, RBC’s support helps ensure this new home on the shore of beautiful Lake Superior will be a place where anyone feels they can belong.”
