$32 million being invested in 2021 by the City of Thunder Bay on road work.
The funding is going towards road and sidewalk rehabilitation, residential paving, sanitary and storm sewers, watermain repair/replacement, bridge and culvert work, and streetlight renewal.
Included in the construction schedule this year is the Edward Street roundabout, which received approval from council in early May. Currently, the intersection of Edward Street and Redwood Avenue is closed to traffic, with a detour around the construction zone.
This will be the first two lane roundabout in the city, and anyone who needs further information on how to navigate it can visit thunderbay.ca/roundabout.
A seperate project on Edward Street is resulting in more closures and detours. The Edward Street Bridge at Needing River is under construction until the end of October. Other streets in the area will be effected.
Another significant project is the Marina Park pedestrian overpass, which will close Water Street in both directions starting July 19 for about three weeks. The price tag is estimated to be around $2-million by the time the project is completed.
With so many projects ongoing throughout this road work season, the city is asking motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians to be alert, and drive with extra care while going through construction zones.
