Courage, compassion, and community can carry you through anything!

Every once in a while, you meet someone who reminds you just how strong the next generation really is. For Lakehead University graduate Madeline Fabiano, the university journey started in the middle of a global lockdown — a time when students were struggling mentally, socially, and academically. But instead of letting that hold her back, Madeline stepped up.

She made it her mission to build a more supportive, inclusive, health‑focused campus. From the Kinesiology Association to the Student Wellness Advisory Team, she connected students with counselling, resources, and simple ways to stay active — even ten minutes at a time.

Her research led to SHINE, a program that helped young women regain confidence in the gym after the pandemic. And her kindness reached far beyond campus, volunteering with the Regional Hospital, WE‑Can, and even serving as a Camp Quality companion for kids with cancer.

All of that heart and hard work has earned her Lakehead University’s 2026 Robert Poulin Memorial Award for Outstanding Citizenship.

Madeline says her father, Enzo, always told her, ‘be a lion’. That was his way of telling her to have the courage to not be afraid.

Enzo would give her advice as often as he could:

A car ride – a life lesson.

Sitting at the dinner table – a life lesson

Taking the garbage out – a 5 minute speech on accountability.

Enzo told Madeline to take all the opportunities that come your way.   And she has — proving that courage, compassion, and community can carry you through anything.  Madeline Fabiano – congratulations.  You deserve it.
