Did you know Thunder Bay has a “safe trade zone” when it comes to FB Marketplace purchases and on-line purchases? It’s something that a lot of people don’t know exists.
If you buy and sell on Marketplace…..and you want to feel comfortable with that exchange, the Thunder Bay Police Service can help. Back in May, 2025, our Police launched what’s officially called: “The Thunder Bay Police Service SAFE TRADE ZONE”. It’s located at the police headquarters, 1200 Balmoral Street.

According to our Police service, the ‘trade zone provides a monitored, well-lit parking area with video surveillance for safe Facebook Marketplace and online classified exchanges – to prevent thefts and robberies”.
It’s a great idea. You should take advantage of this service, especially if you don’t feel comfortable with the exchange process. Have the buyer / seller meet you at the Police station parking lot.

NOTE: did you hear what happened in Toronto recently? A man, Jay, sold his smartphone via Marketplace. The buyer showed up to his home, and gave him $1,900 cash. 19 x $100 bills. After Jay completed the transaction, he sat down and noticed the bills looked weird, and all had the same serial numbers. He contacted Toronto Police and they said that peer-to-peer scams are on the rise.
Another suggestion by police is: if there’s a large cash transaction, meet at your BANK, and have the bank verify if the bills are real.
