The Fort Frances Lakers’ request for a new dressing room is getting pushed to the discussions over next year’s budget.
The plan proposes that the junior A club take over the Borderland Skating Club’s room, and the skating club relocate to another dressing room at the Memorial Sports Centre.
The skating club would also acquire office space that is currently utilized by the Lakers’ coaching staff.
Mayor Andrew Hallikas sees the proposal endorsed by their Community Services manager as a compromise to the space challenges faced at the Sports Centre.
“It’s not a compromise that everyone likes, but she consulted with the two main groups that have been having difficulties over this for some time, and this is the closest that we’ve ever gotten to agreement and a resolution,” says Hallikas.
In a letter to the town in May, the Borderland Skating Club indicated its desire to maintain its existing space, it states was fundraised as part of the expansion of the Memorial Sports Centre more than 25 years ago.
“We have treasured our dressing room for 25 years and made it functional, colourful and
memorable for all of those who share it,” the letter states.
“Graduating skaters and special guests have even signed their names on the wall.”
The club offered up the proposal to give up its space for the new room at no expense to them.
The Lakers first broached the idea of a new dressing room one year ago.
Mayor Andrew Hallikas sees the proposal offered up by their Community Services manager as a compromise to the space challenges faced at the arenas.
Councillor Wendy Brunetta would have liked further discussion involving all of the user groups.
“I’d like this to go back to administration to do a bit more research and to get those groups together, all the groups who are involved and say, let’s think creatively,” says Brunetta.
“Let’s look at the space we have. Everyone submit your requirement in terms of space and try and work out some creative ways, and then come back to council with some recommendations or some thoughts on how we can address these issues.”
Administration is pegging renovations to the dressing rooms at about $175,000.
The Lakers are committing to contributing $15,000 toward renovations for the new skating club rooms.
Town council agreed to consider the expense in next year’s capital budget.
If approved, the change in dressing rooms could happen for the 2026-27 season.
