Reports coming out of Ottawa that the Prime Minister might be invoking the Emergencies Act.
The Act allows the Federal government to have additional powers that would assist with the handling of the protests have that have been happening across the country.
Originally, the War Measures Act was in it’s place throughout the 80’s. It was defined to be used during a national emergency that was considered temporary. It allowed the Federal government to have abilities to enact certain temporary measures that might not be used outside of the specified time of use.
The Prime Minister is able to use this act in scenarios where there is public welfare at risk (ie natural disasters, disease), public order disturbances (civil unrest) as well as international and war emergencies.
There’s been much speculation on if the military would be called in, to which the answers have always been “no”.
Trudeau is expected to notify provincial leaders of his decision later today.
