Thunder Bay’s young people are brimming with creativity, talent, and ambition—and Enter the Den is here to help them develop those strengths into real-world skills. Designed for students in grades 7 to 12, this business plan competition offers an engaging introduction to entrepreneurship through a supportive, educational, and confidence-building experience.

Inspired by the well-known Canadian series Dragon’s Den, Enter the Den preserves the excitement of pitching a business idea while ensuring students receive constructive feedback, encouragement, and access to valuable learning resources. Participants aren’t expected to start an actual business; instead, the goal is to help them understand what entrepreneurship involves and to show them that business ownership can be a viable career path.

A Structured Path to Learning and Growth

Students begin by submitting a brief online application outlining their business idea—essentially a short elevator pitch. The deadline for submissions is February 25th. In early March, a selection committee will choose 7 to 10 students from each grade category to advance to the semi-finals. Those selected will have the opportunity to develop a complete business plan, with guidance on planning, marketing, financial literacy, and more.

Semi-finalists present and defend their ideas before a panel of judges, an experience that builds communication skills and strengthens confidence. Five finalists from each category then receive detailed feedback to refine their ideas before presenting again in May to the Thunder Bay Dragons.

Why This Competition Matters

Over the years, Enter the Den has showcased remarkable ideas from students—some already running small ventures, others transforming hobbies into revenue, and many demonstrating strong awareness of environmental and community needs. Educators and organizers frequently see students grow from shy and uncertain to confident and articulate. Some participants have even pursued entrepreneurship or business studies as a direct result of the competition.

Beyond the prizes, students gain resume-worthy experience, stronger presentation skills, and a deeper understanding of what it takes to bring an idea to life.

Enter the Den isn’t just a competition—it’s an investment in the future innovators of Thunder Bay.

If you know a student with a spark of an idea, encourage them to take part. Their journey could begin here. Learn more at Enter The Den – Student Business Plan Competition.
