Amherst Police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on Prince Arthur Street.

Officers were called just before 7 p.m. on Monday after receiving reports of a loud bang and an injured man. An adult male was found suffering from a gunshot wound to the head and was later pronounced dead in hospital.

Police say those responsible drove off in a vehicle. Investigators believe there is no further risk to the public.

Unconfirmed reports from the area suggest the incident happened near a local homeless shelter. There were also reports that the hospital was briefly on lock-down at the time of the incident following concerns about a possible armed individual.

The investigation remains ongoing, with Amherst Police and the Major Crime Unit continuing to gather evidence.
