It’s been half a century since our country’s greatest hockey moment.

Fifty-years ago today, Paul Henderson scored in Game eight of the ‘Summit Series’ to lift Canada over the Soviet Union.

The goal came with 34 seconds left, and fans watching in homes and classrooms across the country erupted.

The series was at the height of the Cold War, and Canadian forward Phil Esposito said it felt like a war, it was our society versus theirs.

Several members of the 1972 team will be honoured at tonight’s Maple Leafs/Canadiens pre-season game in Toronto.
