A long-time MLA in Cape Breton has passed away.

Alfie MacLeod was the PC member for Sydney-Mira-Louisbourg for 13 years.

He stepped away in 2019 to run in the federal election.

MacLeod was also speaker of the House from 2007-2009.

Just last week, Premier Tim Houston acknowledged his friend and former colleague, and wished him strength in a battle with cancer.

MacLeod was 69-years-old.
