A long-time time educator and politician in southwestern Nova Scotia has passed away.
Gordon Balser was first elected in the former riding of Digby-Annapolis in 1998.
Premier Tim Houston shared the news on X.
“I am shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Gordon Balser, who devoted his life to serving others, first as a teacher and principal, and later as an MLA and cabinet minister. He will be missed by many.”
Balser held many portfolios during his time in office including Economic Development, Transportation and Public Works, Energy and Agriculture and Fisheries.
His daughter, Jill Balser is the current MLA and is the Minister of Labour, Skills and Immigration.
She became the first female MLA for Digby-Annapolis when she was elected in 2021.
