A messy mix of weather is expected Sunday night and Monday for parts of the province

Environment Canada has issued a freezing rain warning for northern mainland Nova Scotia.

Freezing rain is expected to start late Sunday evening and continue until Monday morning, with an estimated duration of four to eight hours.

Areas under the freezing rain warning include:

  • Antigonish County
  • Colchester County – Cobequid Bay
  • Colchester County North
  • Cumberland County
  • Pictou County

Forecasters say a weather system will push a rain/snow boundary across central Nova Scotia, likely causing a persistent period of freezing rain near this boundary.

Areas east of this boundary will experience rain, while areas to the west will see accumulating snow.

A snowfall warning has been issued for Cumberland County, with 15 to 20 centimetres expected from Sunday night until Monday morning. Northerly winds will also cause blowing snow and reduced visibility on Monday.

Meanwhile, a special weather statement is in effect for part of western and central Nova Scotia, including:

  • Annapolis County
  • Colchester County – Truro and south
  • Digby County
  • Hants County
  • Kings County

Forecasters said precipitation is expected to fall mainly as rain, with a transition to snow or possibly freezing rain by morning. Accumulating snowfall can be expected over higher terrain.

Because there is a high degree of uncertainty with the track of the system, Environment Canada said a slight shift to the south could prompt snowfall or freezing rain warnings.
