Incumbent Candidate Marcus Powlowski of the Liberal Party has been re-elected in Thunder Bay-Rainy River.

He is from the region, born in Fort William (now a part of Thunder Bay) and received his education at Harvard, Georgetown, and the University of Toronto.

Before his time in politics, he practiced medicine in northern First Nations, Thunder Bay, and multiple other countries around the world.

He also earned a law degree, a Master’s of Public Health in Health Law and Policy, and a Master’s of Law, and has taught at several universities, including Lakehead University and the University of San Francisco.

Powlowski served most recently on the Standing Committee on Health and the Standing Committee on National Defence.

He is also a member of the Northern Ontario Liberal Caucus, the Rural Liberal Caucus, the International Human Rights Caucus, and the Ukrainian-Canadian Friendship Group.

Powlowski was first elected in 2019 and re-elected in 2021.

He beat out Conservative Candidate Brendan Hyatt, NDP Candidate Yuk-Sem Won, Green Party Candidate Eric Arner, and People’s Party Candidate Sabrina Ree.

Meanwhile, Incumbent Candidate Patty Hadju has been re-elected in the Thunder Bay-Superior North riding for the fourth time.

Hadju has held significant roles in her time in politics, previously serving as Minister of Status of Women, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour, Minister of Health, Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario, and Minister of Indigenous Services.

Prior to politics, Hadju served as the Executive Director of the Shelter House, which provides food, shelter, and aid to those in need.

She is the author of the Thunder Bay Drug Strategy, a document used by the city to shape its response to substance use.

During her work in cabinet, she has been a part of launching the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, establishing the first National Strategy to End Gender Based Violence, and serving as Minister of Health during the COVID-19 pandemic, among other work.
