Kenora’s Jeff Gustafson is among the anglers taking part in this year’s Bassmaster Classic in Fort Worth, Texas.
Gussy says it feels really good to be back for the second year in a row at what’s often referred to as the ‘Super Bowl of Fishing’.
“This is our big Super Bowl event and the biggest tournament of the year,” says Gustafson, “I’m proud to be here and am enjoying every minute (of it).”
He tells us he prefers fishing in deeper water where he can use his technology, but that doesn’t seem to be what he’s in for this weekend.
“The lake is four or five feet high…the water is really high…so a lot of the bushes and trees along the bank are all flooded and that seems to be where most of the activity is.”
The Keewatin product explains that while in most events there are local anglers out on the water at the same time as them, the Classic presents a different challenge.
“There’ll be hundreds of spectator boats out here. The guys who are leading after day one and day two will have a lot of people following them and a lot of people around (and) that can influence your spots, where you fish and how you fish a little bit.”
He adds that that is a good problem to have.
Gustafson finished 31st at last year’s event, which took place in Alabama.
The 2021 Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Classic presented by Huk runs Friday through Sunday.
