A local charity that supports First Nations children has received some important funding.

$20,000 has been donated by Superior Strategies, which is 100 per cent Indigenous owned and operated, to Mikinakoos Children’s Fund. The charity was created to address poverty and provides basic amenities such as food, clothing, and shelter to First Nations children living in remote communities.

Beginning this summer, Superior Strategies owner Jason Thompson sold Every Child Matters Flags and t-shirts, $5 from every sale pledged to the Mikinakoos Children’s Fund.

“As an Indigenous Owned Business, who has been steady in our message around inclusion and change, it means a lot to us to be able to support a local charity that is making a difference in the lives of First Nation children,” stated Thompson. “We can see firsthand the difference that this will make. Each of their programs will be given nearly $7000 and we know that this infusion of funds will go a long way.”

Mikinakoos Children’s Fund relies heavily on funding from individuals and corporations, so acts such as this go a long way. The donation itself was also timely as we ease into the colder months.

“This funding is a game changer,” says Mikinakoos Children’s Fund Executive Director Emily Shandruk. “This donation means that more kids are going to receive more winter gear, we’re going to be able to send more sporting equipment into communities and provide more in school meals. Everything we do is directed by the communities, and we’re really happy to be that conduit to make the change.”
